For students who rely on Istanbul’s buses, metro, trams and ferries, this is one of the most useful transport changes of the new academic year. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s student-support package includes a one-time monthly student abonman for just 1 TL, and the measure was approved by the İBB Assembly on 16 September.
The headline is simple, but the timing matters. This is not a permanent 1 TL student fare and it is not a new monthly price you can repeat indefinitely. It is a one-time discounted monthly subscription that eligible students can purchase during a fixed campaign window. Anyone who already has an active student abonman also needs to pay attention to when that current pass expires.

1. What exactly was approved?
İBB announced the 1 TL student-abonman measure as part of its wider 2026–27 education-support package at the start of the school year. The practical outcome is a heavily discounted monthly student subscription rather than a one-off free-travel day. Eligible students will be able to buy one student abonman for 1 Turkish lira during the campaign period. That subscription then runs for one month from the day it is purchased.
This is separate from the free-public-transport arrangement that applied on the first day of the school year, 14 September. The first-day measure was citywide and time-limited on that day; the 1 TL programme is a student-specific monthly-subscription benefit with its own eligibility and purchase dates.
2. Who can use the 1 TL student abonman?
The current Istanbulkart campaign wording is broader than some early reports that framed the measure mainly around university students. The key published condition is that the user must be an eligible student under 29 who can purchase a student abonman.
That distinction matters. The benefit is tied to student status in the Istanbulkart system and the right to buy a student monthly subscription; it is not a general 1 TL pass for every person under 29. If your student status is not correctly recognised on your Istanbulkart account, resolve that before relying on the offer.
As of September 2026, Istanbulkart says new Student Istanbulkart applications are handled online through its official website. Existing Student Istanbulkart holders should continue using their existing card rather than applying for another one just because this campaign has been announced.
3. The important dates: 21 September to 17 October
The discounted purchase window opens on Monday 21 September 2026 and closes on Saturday 17 October 2026. The 1 TL right is limited to one use during that period.
The monthly abonman itself does not simply expire on 17 October. The published campaign information says the discounted subscription is valid for one month from the date of purchase. So a student who becomes eligible to buy it later in the window can still receive a full month of abonman validity from that later purchase date.
The date you should watch is therefore the last day on which you are able to make the discounted purchase, not just the date on which the resulting pass will stop working.
4. Already have an active student abonman? This is the catch
Students who renewed recently should not assume they can immediately buy a second subscription for 1 TL and queue it behind the current one. The campaign terms reported from Istanbulkart say an existing student abonman must finish before a new one can be purchased under the normal system rules.
In practical terms, check the remaining validity of your current abonman. If it ends between 21 September and 17 October, you should be able to use the 1 TL campaign after the current pass finishes, as long as you complete the purchase before the campaign closes. If your existing abonman runs beyond 17 October, do not assume the discount will be extended: the current published window ends on that date.
This timing issue is likely to be the biggest source of confusion because the offer is generous enough that many students will want to claim it immediately. The safest approach is to check your live Istanbulkart status rather than guessing from when you think you last renewed.
5. What students should do now
First, confirm that your student status is current. If you already have a working Student Istanbulkart, keep using it. If you need a new student card, use Istanbulkart’s official online application process rather than an unofficial form or third-party page.
Second, check your current abonman end date. The campaign starts on 21 September, but there is no advantage in trying to force a new purchase while an existing pass is still active. Your useful date is the first day during the campaign window when the system allows a new student abonman purchase.
Third, use only official Istanbulkart channels to load or confirm the abonman. Istanbulkart Mobile and the official Istanbulkart website provide account and card services, including TL and abonman loading. Campaign-specific prompts can change, so follow the live notice shown by Istanbulkart when the offer opens.
Finally, keep the 17 October deadline in mind. If you are waiting for a current pass to expire, set yourself a reminder rather than assuming the system will preserve the offer automatically.
6. What the 1 TL announcement does not mean
It does not mean ordinary student fares have permanently fallen to 1 TL. It is a special one-time abonman campaign for the 2026–27 education period.
It does not mean you can buy several months in advance for 1 TL each. The offer is limited to one discounted monthly subscription per eligible student.
It also does not remove the underlying student-status rules. The 29-year age condition and student-abonman eligibility still matter, and the existing-pass restriction can affect when you are actually able to make the purchase.
Finally, do not confuse “one month of abonman” with unlimited validity across every possible transport product or special service. The normal scope and operating rules of the student abonman still apply; the headline change is the campaign price.
7. Why this matters for Istanbul residents
Istanbul is a city where education and transport costs intersect every day. Students routinely cross districts — and often continents — to reach universities, schools, libraries, jobs and social activities. A monthly public-transport subscription can therefore be one of the most practical forms of direct support because it reduces a cost that repeats almost every day.
The city’s wider education package includes other forms of assistance, but the 1 TL abonman is unusual because the mechanism is simple and tied directly to an existing transport account. For eligible students who would have bought a monthly abonman anyway, the benefit is immediate rather than theoretical.
