Üsküdar sits on the Asian shore almost directly across from the old city, and its waterfront delivers one of Istanbul's genuinely classic views: the historic peninsula's mosque-and-minaret skyline, seen whole, across the water. Where Kadıköy a little further south has become known for its market energy and younger crowd, Üsküdar keeps a noticeably more traditional, conservative, unhurried character — worth knowing if you're choosing between the two for an Asia-side afternoon.
The waterfront and the view
The stretch of promenade around the ferry terminal is the obvious place to take in the skyline view, especially in late afternoon light. Two small mosques frame the waterfront here — the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, another Mimar Sinan design commissioned for Süleyman the Magnificent's daughter, and the Şemsi Pasha Mosque, a small, perfectly proportioned building right at the water's edge.
Kız Kulesi (Maiden's Tower)
A small tower sitting on its own islet just off Üsküdar's shore, visible from much of the surrounding waterfront and reachable by a short boat trip. Its long history carries several competing legends (most involving a princess and a prophecy), and while the interior visit is optional, the silhouette itself — especially at sunset, with the water and the old city skyline beyond — is one of the more striking small sights on the Bosphorus.
A calmer, more traditional pace
Üsküdar has historically been a more religiously conservative, family-oriented district than much of the rest of the city, and that's still broadly true — expect a quieter, less overtly tourist-facing atmosphere than Kadıköy's café and bar scene a little further south. It's a genuinely pleasant contrast if you've spent a few days in busier parts of town.
