Cross the Golden Horn from Sultanahmet — on foot over the Galata Bridge, or by tram and funicular — and the city changes register. Beyoğlu is Istanbul's 19th- and 20th-century downtown, built up during the late Ottoman period as the European and cosmopolitan side of the city, and it still carries that layered, slightly grander architecture along its main spine.
İstiklal Avenue
The pedestrian backbone of the district, running roughly a mile from Tünel up to Taksim Square. A historic tram trundles its length, and the avenue and its side streets hold the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, cinemas, bookshops and live music venues in the city. It is, without much competition, the busiest single street in Istanbul most evenings.
Galata & the Tower
At the southern end of Beyoğlu, the medieval Galata Tower anchors a neighbourhood of steep, narrow streets that has become one of the city's more design-conscious pockets — boutique shops, specialty coffee, and some of the better viewpoints over the old city skyline and the Golden Horn.
Taksim Square
The functional heart of modern Istanbul — a major transit interchange (M2 metro, buses, the start of İstiklal Avenue) more than a destination in itself, though it's a useful orientation point and the site of significant modern Turkish history.
Cihangir
A quieter, hillside residential pocket just south of Taksim, known for a bohemian, café-heavy character and some genuinely good elevated views toward the Bosphorus from its upper streets — see our Bosphorus-view hotels guide for specifics.
Getting there and around
The historic Tünel funicular (one of the oldest underground railways in the world, after London's) connects the waterfront at Karaköy up to the start of İstiklal Avenue. The M2 metro serves Taksim directly and connects onward toward the airport metro line. From Sultanahmet, the tram plus funicular combination is the standard route across.
If Sultanahmet is where Istanbul shows you its history, Beyoğlu is where it shows you its evenings. Most repeat visitors end up basing themselves here on a second or third trip.
