Cihangir occupies a steep hillside just south of Taksim Square, and has been Istanbul's closest equivalent to a bohemian, artistic quarter for decades — long associated with writers, actors, and a genuinely mixed, cosmopolitan residential population, including a notable long-standing expatriate community. It's quieter and more residential than İstiklal Avenue a short walk north, with a character built around its cafés more than any single sight.

Cihangir's streets are dense with small, independent cafés — many with outdoor seating on quiet, sloped side streets — and it's the sort of neighbourhood that rewards sitting still with a coffee or a kahvaltı spread rather than moving quickly between sights. The views

Firuzağa and the surrounding streets
The neighbourhood blends into the adjoining Firuzağa district without a hard boundary, and both share the same slow, café-dense character — small bookshops, vintage clothing stores, and a noticeably strong population of cats, a detail locals and visitors both tend to remark on.
Should you stay here?
Cihangir works well for a longer stay, particularly for travellers who've done Sultanahmet's sights already and want a quieter, more residential base within easy walking distance of Taksim and İstiklal Avenue's restaurants and nightlife.
