A week is where Istanbul stops feeling like a race. Seven days gives you enough time to see the headline monuments, spend whole afternoons in neighbourhoods, take ferries because they are enjoyable rather than merely efficient, and still keep one day flexible for weather, fatigue or a spontaneous discovery.
This itinerary is deliberately geographic. It keeps each day concentrated in one part of the city and avoids the common mistake of crossing Istanbul repeatedly for attractions that could have been grouped together.
Day 1: Sultanahmet essentials
Start with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern. Check current prayer times before mosque visits and do not overbook the evening. Your first day should teach you the shape of the historic peninsula.
Day 2: Topkapı, archaeology and the waterfront
Give Topkapı Palace the morning. After lunch, serious history visitors can add the Istanbul Archaeology Museums; everyone else can slow down in Gülhane and walk toward Eminönü. Trying to do both museums comprehensively on the same morning is too much.
Day 3: bazaars and Süleymaniye
Begin around the Spice Bazaar and commercial streets of Eminönü, continue toward the Grand Bazaar, then climb to Süleymaniye Mosque. This sequence makes geographical sense and gives you imperial architecture, working markets and ordinary street life in one day.
Day 4: Karaköy, Galata and Beyoğlu
Cross the Golden Horn. Explore Karaköy in the morning, visit Galata Tower if current access suits your schedule, then walk toward İstiklal Avenue and Beyoğlu. Leave time for side streets; the district is much more interesting than a straight march from the tower to Taksim.
Day 5: Dolmabahçe and the European Bosphorus
Make Dolmabahçe Palace the anchor, then continue through Beşiktaş and Ortaköy. If your energy is good, extend toward Arnavutköy or Bebek. If not, take a ferry and let the water do the sightseeing.
Day 6: Kadıköy and the Asian side
Take a morning ferry to Kadıköy, explore the market streets, eat lunch there, then walk or ride toward Moda. You can return directly or add Üsküdar for a different waterfront skyline. See our guides to Kadıköy, Moda and Üsküdar.
Day 7: Princes Islands or a flexible city day
If the weather is good and you want a change of pace, use the official Şehir Hatları timetable to visit Büyükada or Heybeliada. Summer and winter ferry schedules change, so check the operator rather than copying a static departure time. If weather is poor, keep the day in Istanbul for a hammam, museum, Balat/Fener or whatever you missed.
Why the Princes Islands fit best at the end
By Day 7 you know whether you actually want a quiet island day. Putting the islands earlier can cost you a prime city day if rain, wind or jet lag disrupts the schedule. Keeping them flexible makes the week more resilient.
Where the Bosphorus cruise fits
If a formal cruise matters to you, substitute it for part of Day 5 or the island day. Our Bosphorus cruise guide compares the official short, long and evening options with ordinary commuter ferries.
How much should you book ahead?
Reserve only the items where current timed entry or capacity makes that worthwhile. Do not pre-book every hour. Mosque access, weather and Istanbul traffic all reward flexibility.
Transport for a one-week stay
Use Istanbulkart for trams, metro and public ferries, and expect some routes to have distance-based or special fares. Current fare anchors are in our Istanbulkart guide.
What to do if you are staying on the Asian side
Reverse the logic rather than the sights. Put Kadıköy/Moda on an arrival or low-energy day, then group European-side days so you do not make four unnecessary Bosphorus crossings.
Where to stay for this itinerary
Sirkeci is extremely efficient for a first week because it connects the old city, T1 tram and ferry network. Karaköy is stronger for evenings and north-of-the-Golden-Horn days. See our area comparison.
How to handle mosque access
Active mosques operate around worship, not tourism schedules. Check Diyanet prayer times and avoid arriving immediately before prayer. Friday midday is the least flexible period for tourist access.
How to handle heat and rain
In hot weather, put exposed squares and long walks early or late. In rain, move museums and covered bazaars forward. Ferry service can be affected by severe weather, so keep Day 7 movable.
Food strategy
Do not spend a week eating only around Sultanahmet. Use Karaköy, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş and neighbourhood stops to broaden your meals. A week gives you enough time to repeat places you genuinely like instead of chasing a new “famous” restaurant every meal.
The right pace
Two major ticketed sights in one day is often enough. Add neighbourhoods, parks, ferries and food around them. Seven days should feel deeper than a three-day checklist, not like the same checklist with more entries.
